The IS Desk

Overview

The Access Services Department is responsible for staffing the Information Services Desk and providing our library users with assistance accessing information and materials.

Our services include: checking in/out materials, renewing materials, locating materials/information through our resources, providing directional information, explaining policies/procedures, creating/updating library accounts, and processing document delivery (interlibrary loan and photocopy services) requests.

Library Access

Georgetown University (GU) and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (MGUH) Patrons

Dahlgren Memorial Library (DML) adheres to the University's ID badge policy and requires that an ID be visible when you enter the facility. DML staff, including student staff, will ask to see your ID if it is not readily visible. Both GOCard and the MGUH ID are acceptable. If you do not have either of these, you will be asked to present a current picture government ID and sign in. If you do not have your GOCard or MGUH ID during non-staff hours, you will not be able to enter the library.

Visitor Policies

Current photo identification is required to enter the library. Upon entry, you will be asked to leave your ID with the front desk. You will receive a temporary 'Visitor' badge that you should display while you are in the library. Upon exit, you may pick up your ID from the front desk.

Georgetown University Alumni and the general public may visit Dahlgren Memorial Library, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. excluding University holidays.

Patrons who do not have any form of ID will be denied entry into the library.

Children in the library

For reasons of safety and consideration for our patrons, children under the age of 18 who are not a GU student or staff must be in the company of and under the constant supervision of an adult. If children are disruptive or left unattended, both the adult and child will be asked to leave.

Service Animals in the library

With the exception of the service animals, animals are not allowed in Dahlgren Memorial Library. While for the most part, service animals are trained to be quiet and unobtrusive, there are times when a library employee may encounter a patron with a service animal who is disruptive to the library environment and that employee may feel action needs to be taken.

Dahlgren Memorial Library follows the IDEAA Georgetown guidelines:
"If there is a reason to question whether an animal accompanying a student, faculty, or visitor to campus is a service animal or if it is not apparent that the animal is a service dog," DML staff may ask the following questions:

  • "Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability?"
  • "What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?"

Off-Campus Access Instructions

To access our online resources, you must be a current GU affiliate and have a GU NetID and password. If you are unsure about your NetID, please search for yourself on the Georgetown University Directory.

For creating, resetting, and troubleshooting NetID passwords, please contact UIS.

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (MGUH) affiliates: If you do not have a GU NetID, please fill out the Sponsored University Associates (SUA) Form. Please send this form along with a copy of your MGUH ID and current government issued ID to DML Circulation or stop by the Information Services Desk between 8am-8pm, Monday-Friday. Staff and Contact Information

Borrow and Renew Materials

DML accounts to borrow physical materials are automatically created/updated weekly for all Georgetown and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (MGUH) affiliates. To borrow a physical item such as a print book or anatomical model from DML present your Georgetown GOCard or MGUH ID to the staff member at the time of checkout.

Document Delivery

DML's Document Delivery Service (DDS) provides access to a variety of materials to Georgetown University Medical Center students, faculty and staff, SNHS graduate students, and all MedStar Georgetown University Hospital affiliates. There are two main components of DML’s Document Delivery:

  • Interlibrary Loan (ILL): this service obtains journal articles and borrows other items from outside institutions. Learn more.
  • Photocopy Service: this service provides photocopies of journal articles and book chapters from Georgetown University Libraries Collections (Med and Main Campus). Learn more.

Loan Periods and Overdue Fines

Patrons are responsible for knowing the due date and returning materials by the due date. If you forget the due date, please call the Information Services Desk at 202.687.1448, contact DML Circulation, or stop by the Information Services Desk between 8am and 8pm, Monday through Friday (except on most holidays).

*Library email notices and due date cards are only a courtesy.*

During non-staff hours, please drop all materials in the book drop. During staff hours, please drop materials at the Information Services Desk. Please note that we do not check the book drop during weekends and holidays. Items that were due before the IS Desk closes will accrue fines during the days that the IS Desk is closed.

When materials are checked out under your library account, you are responsible for returning them on time.
Patrons who return materials late are held responsible for paying the late fee.
If fines reach $50 and over, you will lose library and database access privileges. Fines can be paid with cash, check, or GOCard.

* These materials are required an agreement form to be signed at checkout.
These materials can be checked out overnight and will be due 9am the next day. Or, it may be checked out over weekends and due 9am on Monday.

Lost and Found

If you have lost or found an item in Dahlgren Memorial Library, please go to the Information Services Desk. All lost and found items will be discarded or sent to the Department of Public Safety quarterly.

Place a book on hold

You must be a registered Georgetown University Library borrower to place holds on books that are checked out currently. You will receive an email when the book is returned to the Library. NOTE: we cannot guarantee that the book will be returned on time.

To place a book on hold:

  1. Using the DML Catalog, find the record for the book you would like to check out.
  2. Click on the link "Request a DML book" at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Complete the form and submit.
  4. When the book is returned, you will be contacted by email to pick it up.

Requests submitted Saturday and Sunday will be processed on the next business day. If you have any questions about your request, please email the Information Services staff.
